HPRA Recognizes BMI Executive Jesus ‘Malverde’ Gonzalez with 2026 ¡BRAVO! Pioneer of The Year Award

— From recording artist to music executive, Gonzalez will be recognized for expanding opportunity and access for a new generation of Latin creators —

LOS ANGELES, CA — October 13, 2026 — (NOTICIAS NEWSWIRE) — The Hispanic Public Relations Association (HPRA) today announced Jesus “Malverde” Gonzalez, Vice President, Creative, Latin at BMI, as its 2026 ¡BRAVO! Pioneer of the Year recognizing a career spent helping Latino artists and songwriters find opportunity, build careers and be seen within an evolving music industry.

Gonzalez will be honored at the 2026 HPRA ¡BRAVO! Awards on November 19 at Los Angeles River Center and Gardens, as HPRA returns to the city where the organization was founded 42 years ago. His recognition is part of this year’s theme, “Legacy in Motion,” celebrating the people who built the spaces we inherited and those continuing to transform them for the generations that follow.

Like many, Jesus’s story begins far from an executive office. A son of Coachella, California, one of the country’s largest immigrant farmworker communities, and a lifelong Angeleno, he entered the music industry as an artist himself. Gonzalez was a recording artist from 2003 to 2009 and, as a songwriter, performed his first BMI SXSW showcase in 2005—years before returning to the organization as an executive.

“The most extraordinary leaders are those who never forget who they were or where they came from before the title, the access or the influence,” said HPRA President Sonia V. Diaz. “Jesus knows what it feels like to be the artist looking for someone to recognize your potential because he lived it. What makes his journey meaningful is that success didn’t separate him from that experience. Instead, it shaped the way he shows up. Today, he is in a position to open doors for other creators, and he has not just chosen to hold those doors open, but to lead the way.”

After his years as a recording artist, Gonzalez built a career at the intersection of music, culture and business. He spent nearly seven years at Universal Music Group, most recently as Senior Vice President of Brands & Partnerships, where he developed collaborations between Latin artists and global companies and helped secure partnerships for artists including J Balvin, Juanes and Luis Fonsi. His career has also included serving as Vice President of Music Partnerships across Rogers & Cowan, FRUKT and Octagon under Interpublic, as well as Principal Partner at music and brand consulting agency Maleco Music.

Gonzalez joined BMI in 2021 and today oversees its Latin Creative team, where he helps sign and develop talent, supports BMI’s community of songwriters and publishers, and serves as a bridge between the Latin music community and the industry at large. His work includes curating showcases, moderating industry conversations, hosting BMI’s annual Latin Awards and developing initiatives designed to support the careers of BMI’s Latin roster. High-profile signings and retentions during his tenure include Peso Pluma, Edgar Barrera, Bizarrap, Ryan Castro and Alvaro Diaz, among others. Gonzalez has also been named to Billboard’s Latin Power Players list for five consecutive years, from 2021 through 2025.

His progression from artist to executive and from seeking opportunity to helping create it for others is central to HPRA’s recognition of Gonzalez as Pioneer of the Year. Long before he was helping shape careers from inside the industry, he understood firsthand what it meant to navigate it without an established roadmap. Today, he brings that perspective to his leadership, using access and influence to offer emerging and independent creators what can make all the difference: guidance, visibility and an opportunity to be seen.

“Legacy isn’t simply about how far we go or what we leave behind,” Diaz added. “It is also about who has a better chance because we were there. Jesus has traveled an extraordinary distance from where his story began, but he has never lost sight of the people still making that journey. It is the spirit of legacy in motion - taking what you learned, what you earned and the doors that opened for you, and turning them into possibility for someone else.”

That story carries particular resonance as ¡BRAVO! returns to Los Angeles, where a small group of Latino communications professionals came together in 1984 to create HPRA. Its founders understood that representation required more than simply being present in an industry. It required building networks, sharing access and creating opportunities for one another—principles that continue to guide HPRA more than four decades later.

Over the years, HPRA has recognized leaders across communications, journalism, entertainment and culture whose work has expanded what is possible for others, including journalists, media personalities and communications industry titans like Maria Hinojosa, Maria Elena Salinas, Alicia Menendez, Enrique Santos, Jessy Terrero, Antonio Tijerino, Soon Mee Kim and Trisch Smith, Karina Martinez among others.
